Summit County 4-H Program Manager emphasizes importance of leadership as life skills for our youth in the community

The Summit County Rotaract group recently had a guest speaker at its last meeting who was quite impressive. Kathie Kralik is the Summit County 4-H Program Manager and she came to Rotaract to speak on the 4-H Youth Development Program. The enthusiasm she had and her willingness to share the 4-H experience with this group of young professionals brought back memories for those of us who had been in 4-H as kids. While many of the 4-H projects have changed and expanded over the years, it was refreshing to hear that the goals, values and ideals have remained the same.

The 4-H Development Program is still a “growing, changing and evolving organization of youth, volunteers and salaried staff who work together to provide a safe environment for Colorado youth to develop life skills."( taken from www.extension.colostate.edu/summit/4hy.shtml) The 4-H program is a little different from other youth organizations because of its relationship with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Colorado State University, the state’s land grant university, along with the Colorado Extension and Summit County Government. All these entities play an important role in making the program what it is. Funding is received from public, corporate, government and private sectors. Kathie explained that several counties throughout Colorado have had to eliminate their 4-H youth programs due to their local governments no longer wanting to fund such a program. She also emphasized the importance of this funding to keep a 4-H program together because of the values and life skills it teaches young people.

Among those values are the partnership between youth and adults being essential to successful youth development, volunteering being a fundamental part of their lives, and the leadership and life skills gained from the diverse range of 4-H experiences. Kathie noted the things that young people experience through 4-H, they carry with them into the adult world to often become leaders in our community and beyond.

Summit County 4-H currently offers over 30 different project clubs ranging from arts and crafts to cake decorating and sewing to rocketry and fly fishing to horses and dog training. All clubs have an adult volunteer leader who specializes in that particular project and enjoys working with youth. In these project clubs, members learn life skills while learning the “hands-on” skill of the project. The clubs meet throughout the year, focusing on setting goals and completing their project for the Annual 4-H Exhibit Days in June and Mountain Community Fair in July. Both provide opportunities for 4-H members to receive recognition and feedback for their hard work throughout the year.

In closing, Kathie informed Rotaract that Summit County 4-H is still looking for leaders and volunteers for various projects, particularly for a new Leadership class being started this year as a way to keep the older teens involved. Anyone interested in helping the 4-H Youth Development Program can contact Kathie at 668-4142, email: kkralik@co.summit.co.us or visit the web, www.extension.colostate.edu/summit/4hy.shtml.

Again, it was good to hear the Summit County 4-H program is still going strong in our community, providing positive, goal setting values and life skills for our youth so that one day, they too will have an opportunity to give something back.
