Hiring in Summit County is getting to be tougher

A short labor market, coupled with an early snow year, well . . .

In the past three months, our office has been through four administrative assistants.  The first left with less than 24 hours notice to leave the State to take care of her ailing mother, with the parting message that the length of time she would be gone was "indeterminate."

Not knowing how long she would be gone, or if she would return, we hired a new admin.  She lasted two months.  In the meantime, the first admin returned, and we had each working four-day weeks.  Within a week, the first admin left with 2 days notice.  A week later, the second admin gave two weeks notice, then quit in the middle of the day 3 days later.  The "stress of the job" got to her.

Took us two weeks to attract, interview and hire a new admin (with Mary covering in the interim).  On her fourth day, with Mary and I out of town, she placed a note on the desk, along with her office key, and walked out.  The job was "just not a perfect fit."  Mary says she didn't even make her cry.

Our new admin, a Czeck here with a green card, has a great attitude, is well educated, and appears to be a great fit.  She gets along well with all our agents.

We have an early snow year.  The resorts are loving it.  The avid alpine skiers and boarders have been getting in their runs now for over a month.  That, combined with a shortage of affordable housing, has made for a very slim labor market.  So, it's not just us.  It is pretty much County wide, and the problem is well enough known that it was picked up by Channel 9 News

Businesses throughout Summit County, in Breckenridge, Copper Mountain, Dillon, Frisco, Keystone and Silverthorne, are having the same problem.  Advertise for a week in the Summit Daily News, and you are lucky to get two good candidates.  Now, the challenge is to retain who you hire.  Need a job?
