| April 17, 2005 | | This couple lives and works conservation | One of my good friends - actually two of them - are Don and Betsy Sather. They've lived in Summit County more years than most, and have owned BigHorn Materials many of those years - in both locations. In the late 90s, they sold the land their building materials business was on in Frisco and built a new BigHorn Center in Silverthorne. That presented an opportunity they'd been seeking for some time - making it the most conservation friendly, energy-saving facility they could. They've proven that business can be successful - and the bottom line improved - through the use of eco-friendly construction. In Summit County, they are truly become "A Sphere of Influence." They not only built a building that has won numerous awards, locally, nationally and even internationally. The American Institute of Architects named the BigHorn Center to its top-10 list of green projects in the U.S. in 2001. And in 2002, the U.S. Department of Energy selected it as one of five American buildings to represent the U.S. in the International Green Buildings Challenge in Oslo, Norway. With all that, it would be easy to think that this couple is high flying and proud. And that would be furthest from the truth. They are down-to-earth, friendly, and quickly welcome anyone to their store - to purchase or just to look around. So, come visit. You won't be disappointed. | |
