| February 04, 2005 | | SPR votes on the winning radio station | As expected, the Summit Public Radio (SPR) board met and voted between the two radio stations vying for the same signal in Summit County. KBCO has been carried on the airwaves in Summit County for around 20 years. In fact, this station was the reason that Summit Public Radio came into being. The employees at the Red, White and Blue Fire Station in Breckenridge found a spot on Baldy Mountain years ago where they could capture the signal and rebroadcast it into Summit County. It was the station and its music that they wanted. However, a few months ago, KSKE, a country station that actually broadcasts locally (but cannot get the signal into Breckenridge), asked to replace KBCO. Listeners were polled, by SPR, by news articles, and by advertisements from both contenders. The results were roughly 10 to 1 in favor of KBCO. And so, the Boulder radio station, famous nationally for its live Studio C recordings of top artists, and one of the most popular rock stations in Colorado, will remain. Since our vote, I've received unsolicited thanks from many people I've encountered who knew that I am one of those board members. You can read more about it here. | |
