Well, this isn't a story about a property, or a town, or statistics. It's a story about humanity, and about one of the more human among us. Brad Odekirk fell to his death last night. Those who knew him wept. Those who didn't wish they'd had more of a chance to get to know him. He was a mainstay at the Summit Daily News, the staff photographer since I came to the County in 1994. Probably no one else at the News had a history that long at the paper. He took a couple of photos of me as part of news stories, and I never stopped to talk, to ask him how he liked his job, what it was that kept him entranced so long. I was more focused, of course, on me. And it occurs to me that much of every day for him was catering to others who were more interested in themselves. But, I do know from friends that he was a terrific guy, a world traveler, a good friend, and an ethical human being. He will be sorely missed. |
