Second homes can dominate the economy

Second homeowners bring lots of money, some worries, to Summit County

Some second homes are huge mansions on vast acreage, castles that are perhaps smaller than their first homes, but with all the amenities.  These tend to get most of the attention, being inhabited, albeit sporadically, by shieks and stars and othe luminaries.  But second homes can also be very modest, not much more than a decent hotel room.  In either case, they are increasingly popular, the preferred place for baby boomers, investors, and others interested in protecting (and increasing) their wealth to put their money.

The upside is that second homes provide havens for those looking for a respite from the city, the traffic, the noise, the distractions of a routine existence.  In addition, they provide different ways to spend one's time, an expansion of one's mind, body and soul.  More and more often, they serve as a bridge to retirement as, after a few years (typically), the second home becomes primary.

The downside is that second homeowners, generally being a bit more affluent than the local working population, can tend to intimidate financially, can bring congestion, expansion that some would consider unneeded or intrusive, and can dominate the landscape.

But they also create not only jobs but a myriad of businesses hell bent on serving them.  From security services to homesitters, architecture and construction to furniture companies and decorators to, locals tend to find a way to fill the needs of those willing to pay.

Owners also bring tax dollars and start foundations, initiate or otherwise embellish the arts in all its forms, and bring variety to the community.  And interestingly, they consume very little in terms of public services.

So, whether you can only afford a studio condo, or are more suited to a ranch, at some point, you will be faced with the question:  Are you a second homeowner in spirit?  If so, your SnowHome just might be available in Breckenridge, Keystone, Frisco, Dillon, Copper Mountain or Silverthorne.  Shop with a good agent and find out.
