A week ago, I sat in one of our monthly meetings of the Summit Leadership Forum and listened as Copper Mountain CEO Larry Rogers spoke of his company's hopes for expansion. They had shrugged off the rejection by the Summit County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) a year or two ago of their aggressive expansion plan that would have doubled both their on-mountain amentities and their base holdings. That plan had been in the works for over three years, and the rejection hurt, particularly when Intrawest, owner of Copper Mountain Ski Resort, felt it had been working hard to satisfy objecions of the BOCC. So, Larry was cautiously optimistic about approval of the scaled down version of the expansion plan. But this story is not about that plan (fooled ya). But it is about Copper's expansion through Forest Service easements. The Sierra Lift will get lengthened, the Alpine Lift will get both lengthened and added capacity, and the new Tucker Lift will be built. Several trails will be improved, and on-mountain facilities will be expanded. Finally, snowmaking systems will be upgraded, and 148 acres will be added to the snowmaking plan. Bob Berwyn of the Summit Daily News covers it well here. It's worth a good read - providing, like me, you like to ski at Copper. And the next time I see Larry Rogers, you know he'll be sporting a big smile. ===================== Want to buy or sell a SnowHome in Summit County? Please visit our website.
